Went for a bit of a drive yesterday to pick up a friend's Triumph Spitfire that he left in the countryside. Halfway back following him, he starts to run poorly and we pull into an Advance Auto Parts. We narrow it down to battery or alternator, and the car won't crank anymore. Of course they don't have the right size battery, so he hops back in the Boxster with me, and we go down the road for a battery.
As soon as we hook up the battery, the alternator starts to smoke. Cue the search for an alternator.
We then take the Boxster 40 minutes the opposite direction of home to the nearest store with a Lucas alternator in stock, drive back, install it in the Triumph, hook up the battery, and drive both cars home just in time for dinner.
(not sure how to host images, otherwise I'd put some photos here)
