+1 what DenverPete says. There is a cable system which transmits the force from the gearshift to the actual tranny, but unlike other cars, it is not adjustable.
Still, it could just be Mud, Road Debris or such on the translator (mounting outside the tranny). Best to get it on a lift and check it out. Good Luck!...
