Typically the plastic breaks where the spring is mounted. I have repaired a couple with a hard epoxy such as JB Weld. Replacing the storage door cover itself is fairly simple by just removing screws. Note that if you buy a replacement cover that the 1999 and earlier are generally a plain plastic finish and the later models had the black soft-touch (easy scratch) finish.
