There isn't much room to move it forward on the console. It's secured to the central tunnel by 4 hard mounted studs that fit through the shifter assembly base, so you would have to cut those studs out and weld new ones in. You are right though, there isn't much stretch length in those cable, maybe a cm or 2 at the most.

Raising the assembly is another story though. I just recently raised it by 4 cm and the cables reached no problem - just had to do a bit or rerouting through the clips back by the handbrake to get the slack.
