I think I figured the 5500 mark - it's not for our our engines, but for the 3.4. Looking at the 996 power output curves, the torque starts to drop right around that mark and when the variocam kicks off it looks like it does a good job of buying another 1000 rpm of flattish curve. I've read several places though that this is point where all motors are programmed to kick over (2.5, 2.7, 3.2, 3.4). Could it be that stuttgart again shorted the 986 on a performance aspect that was optimized for the 996?

Now to figure out how to adjust those transition points in piwis. Anyone have suggestions? I'm guessing it's buried in developer mode...
