Just finished putting my new top on and I agree that there should be two of these straps, one on each side. One end riveted to the top bow and one to the bottom. They were not involved at all with removing the old top or reattaching the new top. The only thing I could figure out was that they added some support to the canvas top to help hold it's shape a little better.
