My question is - are there cheaper options that get the job done? The Durametric Enthusiast level is close to $300 while there are some stand alone readers for about $70, e.g. Foxwell. Are the latter cheap in more than price? Thanks for any insights you may have.

Foxwell NT520 pro does most of the things a Durametric will do.
Runs about $175.00 delivered.
Go to the Foxwell website and read up on it. If you have specific questions about it contact me here on the forum and I will answer them the best I can.
I own both the Foxwell NT520 pro and the Durametric Pro
