While waiting for a response I decided to answer my own question. I took the plate that is under the drive gear off. No springs popped out... it was nice and clean with grease in good condition. I added more grease and put it back together. I'm not ready to take the motor itself off, so it will go back as is.
Now I'm wondering if I should add grease to the new regulator that I am installing. I am tempted. The old broken regulator had grease in the cable spool that attaches to the motor.
