I would usually resist banging on catalytic converters or most parts of exhaust at any time. I think that is why most exhaust service may recommend heat for stuck pipes and hardware. You can shake loose the internals (honeycomb) causing a restricted flow of gasses. If you didn't have the code before...that sucks. I'm hoping it is the sensor too. Check the wiring on the sensor if you disconnected it and exhaust leaks in front of cat. Only advice I have. Good luck. Enjoy your car.
