I've owned both.
I had a 2003 Z4 3.0 6sp with sport and premium from Late 2003 to 2007, and replaced with 2000 Boxster S 6sp.
My BMW was under warranty during ownership. Owned from 5k miles to 30K miles. Other than tires, I believe my only warranty work outside of maintenance was having an airbag warning show up.
The car was very nice, no real complaints at all.
Then I drove the Boxster S. Owned for 10 years from 75K miles to 133K miles, obviously out of warranty. For me, The Box was way more fun to drive than the Z4. I really felt like a sports car.
Although I certainly had items needing replacement during my ownership, I never had it to the dealer or an indy. The car never left me stranded and was a fun and solid when I sold it'd had been when I bought it.
Drive both. See what you think!
