To answer my own question, after a few hours of shifting the transmission from under the car, I removed the adjustment linkages, and found no adjustments at the transmission end of things.,
BUT, it seems during removal of the transmission, the bottom pivot hardware was bent. This kept the side to side adjustment too far to the right, and didn't allow getting into 1 or 2.
A field adjustment in the vise, and everything is nice and smooth.
FYI for anyone lacking first or second gear......
