Transmission/shifter side to side play adjustment

Me again..... 99 Base Boxster, 5 speed manual.

I'm moving along on my "back from the dead cheap Boxster" project. Replacement engine is in, and I was able to back it out of my garage for the first time today. Big accomplishment, short lived since the car won't go into first gear.

I believe the car was driving fine before the engine went and it was put up for sale, but who knows at this rate......

3,4,5,Reverse all feel like they are engaging smoothly, BUT the shifter refuses to pull close enough to the drivers seat (US Car) to engage 1 or 2.

Poking around, it really looks like the vertical "rod" that goes between the two cables at the transmission end of things is too short. when the upper shift rod is in neutral, the bottom pivot with the curved cut out to limit rotation for side to side motion is at the top of it's travel. If I disconnect the vertical "rod" (more of a stiff cable with the ball ends), I can move the upper shift rod "up" further then when connected and it feels like that's 1 and 2 on the shifting.

Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you very much.
