No way you'll get the TB to seal tightly enough to stop smoke getting past it. Most of us would put a rubber-glove over the TB, or stick a rubber ball in its mouth, or something.

The added benefit of this is you'll be dramatically reducing the volume of air you're displacing with the smoke, meaning the leak you DO have should become MUCH more obvious.
