In 1999 I did something similar for for my now ex-wife. Bought an 89 535i off eBay... had it shipped to my mechanic... gave him $10K and told him to make it run and look great. He didn't disappoint.
The last gift over Christmas dinner was a little box that held the key connected to the 5 Series keychain. As soon as she opened it asking, "What does this 5 mean" the three kids literally jumped out of their chairs knowing exactly what it meant, lol. The driveway held the clue.
I believe having a new, used whatever, car in the driveway for a loved one is an awesome gift.
By the way... the white windscreens look great! I'm now considering painting mine to match.
