It's complicated.
While I do have family in southern Louisiana and TX including a parish named after my daddy's side "Moss Bluff, LA", I am not technically Cajun by blood... as far as we know. My dad came to CA from the TX panhandle in the back of a pickup truck during the 30s dustbowl era. A chapter right out of The Grapes of Wrath.
The Cajundaddy nickname comes from my cooking style on the BBQ. I like to get her real hot before throwing on the meat so it gets properly seared right away and locks in the juices. One time I was feeding my kids swim team and things might have gotten a bit beyond the searing, and all the way to blackened. We all had a good laugh after the flames were doused and Cajundaddy was my name for the rest of the year poolside. It just stuck.
