When you remove a tensioner in any position besides TDC and without the cams locked, you are letting a chain go very slack while one or more valves have their springs compressed; this is the perfect condition for that spring pressure to try to rotate the cams, jumping time in the process. There is one way to do it safely, and an infinite number of ways to ask for trouble...………….
