I've replaced a couple. There's a rubber hose on the bottom that can be difficult to clamp in place, but it's not '$1,000 difficult'. The only other factor I can think of is that some of the more rigid plastic hoses that attach to it may be brittle and need replacement too. That may justify the $400, but not $1,000.
