Actually, you CAN install a 996 engine in a '03 or '04 Boxster with ME 7.8. You just need to add the wires to the harness for the additional cam adjuster actuators. After that, you simplify flash the DME with 996 code. BTDT. The DME itself is the same part number in the late 986 and 996.
