+1 on what Mike says. While living in the Catskills I generally put less than 1,500 miles a season on my 986. I changed the oil and filter at the beginning of the driving season and I made sure my immediate pre-storage run was at least 60-70 miles to be sure that all of the vapors were burnt off.

There is certainly no harm to changing the oil and filter as part of the winterizing routine but the more important point is to be sure each time you drive the car you drive it long enough to burn off the vapors. Serial short cold engine drives (even in the summer season) are major contributors to oil contamination.
