I learned long ago (the hard way), when I was collecting artwork, to spray cleaner upon the cloth... then to the glass/plastic/whatever.
When cleaning a serigraph hanging on my wall I sprayed the glass with cleaner... not thinking twice about the water running to the bottom... and being soaked up by the matting. Wick'd that stuff right up to the serigraph. Never again.
