An update to my thread...
Before I ordered a new airbag switch I decided to removed the airbag to check things out. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the connector to the airbag had come loose- no doubt my mistake. After reconnecting the wiring I used the Durametric software to read the codes, cleared them, and the airbag warning light is gone.
Guess I didn't screw it up after all.
