I was considering or imagining compression of the cable run "arc" giving rise to restricted movement....IIRC cable operated fine when removed from the car.
The 987 with more clearance could eliminate this if it was a factor.

There should be NO binding AT ALL occurring at the firewall where the cables run through. I am talking about the shifter mechanism itself as a 987 unit. Much better overall. If your cables are binding for any reason, that is a significant problem, and needs to be addressed.
