Help: Broken Flywheel

If you will recall, in a previous post I described my incident where my 2001 Boxster 5spd 41ki miles made a loud hiss while driving home from the service shop and went dead on the side of the road. I towed the vehicle back and the diagnostics machine showed a bad RPM sensor.

A week or so ago, the mechanics tore into the car to check out the RPM sensor and discovered that the flywheel had "expoded" into pieces! Upon talking with the service rep., she explained that none of the technicians had ever seen or heard of a flywheel breaking into pieces. Apparently, the surface of the flywheel can wear out due to friction with the clutch, but that it shouldn't break like this. I talked to another Porsche dealership and the techs there also said that they had never seen or heard of this happening either. Both places agreed that it sounded like a defective flywheel. The dealership that is repairing it contacted Porsche and they declined a "goodwill" repair. I called customer care and they said that they couldn't help and suggested that I write to Porsche.

The techs also noted that the clutch looked to still be in pretty good condition, but suggested that I go ahead and replace it while they have the transmission apart. I guess that I will do this...what do you think?

Has anyone heard of a flywheel breaking into pieces? any other thoughts on what to do?

Thanks,
Gerald
