I've said it before and I'll say it again - there is absolutely no reason a company would pay for something out of warranty as "goodwill" unless they got something out of it. Particularly when that goodwill runs into the thousands of dollars.

In the end it's all a cost/benefit analysis. Paying 50% towards something you know is defective defers a recall or class-action lawsuit which would require 100% payment, potentially a recall, and unlimited bad publicity. And, the owner is so relieved they aren't on the hook for $12,000 that they never consider they shouldn't even be responsible for $6,000. It's freaking BRILLIANT!
