Basically you jack up the car ensuring that it is level, crank it up, let the transmission fluid warm up to 30c-45c (86f-113f), and then remove the fill plug for the auto transmission. If a small amount of fluid comes out, the level is correct.

Thank you Steve, I am not sure how the owner determined that the transmission was empty after the oil leak.
He mentioned that it developed a large leak where the engine and transmission meet, but the leak could come from somewhere else, I will be checking his car tonight and hopefully find that the leak is nothing serious..
