Extra stiff clutch question

Hi all!

I am looking for some opinions regarding the clutch on 2001 Boxster S (28K miles). I have read all closely related threads, but I haven't been able to find a definite answer.

My clutch pedal is very stiff. It makes long drives both frustrating and painful. I had my mechanic, a specialist in racing Porsches, take a look. He agreed that the clutch is stiffer than it should be. He also tested the car for slippage, but he was unable to make it slip at either high or low revs.

I asked him what might be causing the problem, and he said that he can only guess that the pressure plate might have experienced some high heat and became stiff. He doesn't think that the clutch is worn.

I am confused by his comments as well as what I have read.

Does a stiff clutch indicate it's time to replace the clutch assembly?
What does the clutch boost spring do under the dash? Could it be the problem?
Could the clutch cylinders need bleeding?
Wouldn't high heat make the pressure plate softer rather than stiffer?
Is there anything else I should check before having the clutch replaced?

Your thoughts and comments are sincerely appreciated!
