A very common misconception is that the "W" stands for weight. That's not true. It stands for "Winter" and just means that the first number is the viscosity rating at 0 celsius. The second number is the viscosity rating at 100 degrees celsius (212 fahrenheit) which is generally operating temperature. So it's the second number that you're really concerned about. The biggest advantage of a low Winter number is quicker flow at startup.
