Brake pad swap oddness

So I received my new Redstuff pads specified for my Boxster S.
I start the job (first time). To my dismay, I find that the old pads are different from the new ones: the new pads are taller. There is a lip on the rotor where the old pads ended (yellow arrow). The new ones extend further in and won't easily slide past the lip. I have ordered new front disks since these ones are nearing the limit anyway.
Have I got this wrong, or did somebody else f*** up?
