If you switch to the newer style 987 lever you need all the rest of those parts too. The pivot ball is a different height and the method of retaining it all together is different.
The "upgrade" addresses some owner complaints about a squeaky type noise coming from the clutch mechanism. If no noise or you don't care, the old lever is fine.
