So yesterday I want to a friend with a '03 Boxster who has many more mechanical genes (and tools) than I. He used the bicycle cable adjuster hack. Got it fixed in just under two hours (at least for now).

I want to thank all who posted their ideas, experiences, and wit. You were all a great help!
