A smoke system would only see external leaks, most AOS failures are due to internal leaks so the smoke would not be extremely useful. The best way to test an AOS is to use a digital manometer capable of reading 0-10 inches of water attached to an old oil filler cap. If the AOS was good, you should see around 5 inches of water vacuum signal, anything over 7-10 inches and the AOS is toast.
