It is a fact of life for any car to go through wheel bearings. The ones in the 986 are not problematic. The bearings are pressed into the housing similar to front wheel drive cars.

There is a contraption that you can buy to do them in the car. I'm a fan of removing the hub and taking it to a machine shop instead. Ymmv.

I recommend waynes book, "101 projects for your boxster" as a place to start any DIY thoughts.
