Been there done that... See my thread 'strange clutch behaviour' or Capt. 's other thread. Turned out the release bearing broke free from the arm because the surface it pushes against was uneven because the clutch cover bolts were loosening off allowing the 'fingers' to sit uneven . Porsche relies on two needle -like arms to keep the arm and bearing together but only works on paper and when everything is perfect! Toyota uses 2 large spring clips and would work for ever even if one fell off (reliability).
