I bought an AUX input cord from
https://www.discountcarstereo.com/login.php @ $10 and it works fine with my CDR220. I'm also running an Alpine 4 channel 50W amp to power Boston 4 inch speakers in the original locations. To use your words, the sound is still just adequate IMO. Good luck with your build.
