Yes, I left the old covering on. Mine opens and closes with no issues. I'm not sure what trim piece you are talking about. Here are a couple of pics of mine. You can see in the second picture that I was short a little bit of leather but it is secure. That is the only spot that wasn't perfect, but it is unnoticeable unless you open it and even then, in real life it is not noticble.
