Benjamin, I think its a very high probability you nailed it with the thought that the metal flakes were from the previous failure because of where you found them. That's pretty darned insightful. From my limited experience of rebuilding one m96 after an IMSB failure, the path you've laid out makes excellent sense particularly as you are going in eyes wide open to the possible risks and benefits.
