I'll chime in as I have these in my new to me 2002 S. Yes they are overly complicated for what they are. I had to remove mine because the drivers side was pushed in past the face plate. Turns out the " cage " that holds the cup holder allowed it to slip past the stops. I spot caulked with an adhesive caulk to stop the sliding. Then I had to repair the top of both cup holders because apparently the heat from the dash, the heat/cold from the dash vents make the plastic brittle. Got that fixed then found out almost every decent insulated coffee mug won't fit the damn thing !
Yes you can find mugs that will fit but then the next problem, if you have the AC on your hot coffee quickly cools.........stupid design. Oh and if your mug/soda/drink spills it runs down on your electronic items below.........stupid design. Today I received the two ultimate cupholders I ordered on Monday. They are cheaper than this overly complex POS and place your drinks low on the floor where they should be in my opinion.
