As was explained to me these 6 speeds have a inherit weakness in the 2nd gear slide mechanism ( hope I have that right ). It is held on both ends by VERY flimsy bushings. These bushings wear and when they do the 2nd gear engagement is not full. Jim gave me the old parts that were replaced and he pointed out how small the gear engagement teeth are for the slider !!!! They are not very big. So just a little bit of wear on those flimsy bushings and she starts to tear herself apart. Jim line bores the case for lack of a better term and installs much larger bronze bushings and larger seals. He says he's NEVER had one come back and he's done a bunch of 986/996 transmissions. The OEM bushings are really a joke. I'm probably not explaining everything correctly but I got a 15 minute data dump from Jim and that's what I remember. He says the transmission is now bullet proof as long as I use the clutch and change the fluid every 50k or so.
