dunno if automatic is the same as manual, but on a manual the bolts pass through the cv and into the transmission flange. cv should be fine, but good opportunity to pull the axle(s?) and service them while in there - boots, grease, bands, inspect the joints themselves.
chances are good the bolts didn't shear. prolly what happened is that the tranny was serviced recently. when pushing the bolts through the cv to thread into the flange they got cv grease on the threads and don't stay torqued. they then fall out a few kms later.
