There is something to be said for tradition too.
Before the days of covering race cars with sponsorship graphics cars were raced for their nationality. Italy of course was red. It would be hard for me to buy a Ferrari in any color other than Blood Red. British Racing Green for all the cars from the UK. French racers ran that light blue color that we see on a 30's Bugatti. In the U.S. Cunnigham went to Le Mans with white cars with blue stripes.
And then there was Germany and the Audi Silver Arrows. Silver is the traditional color for our cars.
I should also point out that different makes often had different shades. Aston Martin ran a dark shade of green that looked almost black while Lotus ran a brighter green with their yellow stripes.
Today many of our racers run colors that are a sponsors color and not the color of their nation. Kind of a shame, but then if we all ran national colors all our Porsches would be silver. Boring.
