I guess I can imagine the second one not being OEM, but it doesn't look like something a hobbyist came up with either. In any case, if you're correct and all OEM cans are like pic 1, then my hack will be easier-- like yours, except I'm going to do electric valves in the bypass piping so I can adjust the noise level as desired.
