The best coating is a good coat of wax. This not only helps protect the wheels from the potentially corrosive effects of the brake dust, but also will make cleanup much eaiser (not to mention that this will also make your wheels look great!).
I would also recommend a good wheel cleaner (I use Meguair's Professional #36 Wheel cleaner) and soft brush.
