Had my share of check engine lights, and minor recalls, and 1 bum battery (dealer-replaced free of charge; car out of warranty) with the 997.2S, and (so far) no problems with the 981. I used both the 987 and 997.2 as dailys (with winter tires in winter). I had around 25,000 miles in the 987 over 3+ years, ~28,000 miles in the 997.2S in ~4 years, and recently cracked 1k miles in the 981 over ~7 months (ok, the little metal piece for the iPod plug-in fell back behind the plastic, but was fixed before going 2 miles in the courtesy drive to work).
In buying new, I've either bought well-built cars, drove cars appropriately, or been lucky (or combination).
