Discovery had already occurred and the figure were known and are public.
So we have an idea of the failure rate but not the shape of the years/miles versus failure curve.
The funny thing is every engine ever built can fail and they all can fail at the worst possible time (think of that as you try to squeeze in between those semis). But we know so much (or think we do) and care so much about these beautiful cars we can't stand for them to have a fault.
Do wheel bearings wear/fail? Do throwout bearings wear/fail? So why not IMS bearings?
If there was a $2k rebuilt engine available like there was for my Caravan, we wouldn't be as concerned. But $8k to $20k is a lot of money and lots of the people buying these cars now don't have the spare cash lying around.
