How to replace a variocam actuator

My shop just called me up and told me the one of the variocam actuator isn't responding (I can't remember which one). They're telling me they need to pull the motor to replace it which is a drag. I'm hoping there is a work around, does anyone have a write up or know whats involved? I'm told the valve cover has to come off which can't happen unless the engine is out of the car. I remember dropping the engine quite a bit when I did the engine mount and I think I could pull the cover without taking the whole engine out. Thoughts?
