About anything will work to get the yellow layer off, I used Turtle (I usually stay away from Turtle!). As long there is a good final polishing step you're fine. The pitting is a much more difficult problem. These seem to be rather deep microcracks. You would have to remove quite a lot of material to get rid of those.
