just an FYI from my own experience:

if you ever need to adjust or replace your shifter cables using the VW/porsche tool, you have to swap your factory shifter back in to set the adjustment, and then you can put the short shift back in (it's actually not a difficult thing to do). When I replaced my cables, I was really glad I'd held onto my stock shifter console.
