Harbor freight sells the rubber pads that fit on top of the jack stands, i got 4 for about $15. No need to use a hockey puck.
I've seen people carving out a hockey puck to fit on on their floor jack, but again, harbor freights has great aluminum floor jack that have a built in protecting pad.
