Reverse lock-out problem

Yesterday, I took the Box out for a rare weekday drive, going to a local PCA meeting. On the way, I stopped in a shopping center, and could not get into reverse. It was like there was no lock-out resistance, but when i pushed the gear shift to where reverse was, all I got was first gear.

I thought I was going to have to endure the embarrassment of having to push my car out of the parking space, but after selecting some more gears, the lock-out sort of sprung back to life and reverse started working again.

Does this mean I need to take the gear shifter apart and lubricate things, or go ahead and plan on installing a new short shifter. This cable linkage system is a bit weird to me.

Oh by the way, it is a 986 S with the 6 speed box.

Thanks for any info.
