I replaced my fuel sending unit and my mechanic recalibrated it with a PST tool by slowly adding fuel to a nearly empty tank and I still don't get a 4/4 reading on a totally full tank. 7/8 is as good as it gets.
It's very frustrating for me because I want my cars to be perfect.
One problem some 986/996s have is the cables/hoses in the tank keep the float down and they need to be zip tied away. This could also be a contributory problem, but Ghostrider's suggestion above about a clogged vent should be explored first.
